Contextual framework

DEVELOPMENT OF A STRATEGIC VISION FOR MEDELLIN.

While Medellin occupies a privileged place in the network of cities nationwide, like other large urban centers are facing great threats that undermine its future positioning, since cities must now face the challenge of betting on a future that ensures their competitiveness and sustainability. In fact competitiveness as an urban center would only be possible if we ensure the environmental sustainability of the city and its surroundings.

Medellin and its environment, has significant comparative advantages based on its great strengths. Its offer Urban undoubtedly highly significant in various dimensions of development. So, boost to Medellin and the surrounding region required to identify future challenges and strengthen their attributes

In the short term there are great opportunities to make Medellin in a node connecting the region with its surroundings, the possibility of structuring the network of mountain highway, will provide important comparative advantages of location with a wide international projection magnitude. His current urban development supported by principles of respect for natural resources and especially the river Medellin as the vector of its important developed, the trail presents an important future approach. However, to become a first-order capital must address serious structural problems that relate to the various factors of underdevelopment violence and poverty facing our urban centers.
So pass the sustainability of the city implies that another key element to consider is PEACE: peace between individuals and between these and the environment.
MEDELLIN-RIO (Towards sustainable city-region)

MEDELLIN AS STAGE FOR THE PROMOTION AS A SUSTAINABLE CITY.

The main objective of the event-Rio Medellin (towards sustainability city-region) is to promote Medellin in the city-region context, as an urban center able to align in unison with the guidelines, policies and strategies promulgated at the World Summit Rio + 20, with the goal of becoming a center that promotes alternative urban development, responding to the challenges that climate change requires us. In this sense, the CONVERSION of Medellin and its environment is putting forward, toward a region spatially in harmony with their environment, socially equitable, economically competitive, directing all its efforts towards "green economy", trade and financial responsibility with natural resources and environment in general and urban development based on principles of ethics, accountability, and supported an alternative model of land occupation.

Climate change threatens the planet that has a large uncertainty about the near future of cities and regions, is showing us major implications and demanding challenges for urban development, cities need to reorient all its processes and settlement patterns, since today is no longer sufficient for the renewal of traditional planning tools. Today, cities demand more energy to operate, it is estimated that by 2025 will require five to ten times more energy than currently used per capita. This phenomenon requires profound changes in the forms of planning, urban design, planning, intervention and construction of urban centers in search of each and every one of the measures seek to minimize their environmental impacts.

Without energy, urban collapse, the current technological revolution tirelessly seeking alternative energy sources based on biomass, sun and wind, in order to avoid the use of fossil fuels increasing every day more CO2 emissions. Uncertainty over the short-term lack of energy sources like oil increases and in different directions looking for solutions to reduce energy consumption. It is assumed that the search for independent energy systems for small units, contrary to the large current production systems, avoid risky reliance on a single power station. Several countries in the world, seeking innovative solutions from design solutions such as wind energy plants, solar panels on roofs and facades of buildings, Wind units on the roofs of buildings, in short, arise various alternative scenarios.
We talk about eco-city, Ecovillages, economic planning, Bio-architecture, eco architecture, and all these new concepts only take us back to reality "The quest for sustainability of the city."
We still take all the challenge of SAVE THE PLANET, and this initiative which we call today Medellin-Rio (towards sustainability city-region), seeks to align a strong and forceful, the global guidelines for adaptation and mitigation to threats of climate change and competencies promulgated by the United Nations.
