Introduction

Regional meeting of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative (AII), will act as a forum for promoting sub-regional cooperation and affirmation of the current environmental issues, sustainable development and green economy at the member state level. It will be a suitable gathering for country representatives and other stakeholders to define priorities, activities and strategic directions for the development of green economy in accordance with their respective national circumstances, available resources and needs.

The Side Event will act as a follow-up to the Roundtable on the Environmental Protection of the Adriatic ? Ionian Initiative, on the Road to Rio+20, which will be held in Belgrade on 22nd March. Conclusions of this regional meeting will be presented and further discussed.

Detailed programme

The attendants will share the findings from their Green Economy Studies and discuss potential regional cooperation, regional initiative and processes in the context of transitioning to green economy after the Conference. Country representatives will present the state of affairs in the field of green economy, projected developments, and planned activities. Particular focus will be on findings and conclusions of the Belgrade AII Roundtable and planning for further developments. Common grounds, shared problems, and potential solutions will be the focus of the meeting. The AII Side Event will be an example of an successful ongoing regional cooperation that can serve as an example for other (potential) regional activities. In terms of potential contribution to the outcome of the Conference, the Side Event will be an attempt to harmonize positions of the countries in the region and constructively contribute to the negotiations by strengthening cooperation for taking on new challenges and by positioning stances regionally and supranationally (EU).
