Major Groups & Stakeholders Asia-Pacific Meeting ?The Road to Rio 2012: Charting our Path?
17 Oct 2011 - 18 Oct 2011
Seoul, Republic of Korea

The UN General Assembly passed a resolution in December 2009 to hold a Rio+20 Earth Summit in 2012. The conference will take place in Brazil on 4-6 June 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg.

From the first meeting in 1992, the participation of various stakeholder groups in society was seen as imperative to achieving sustainable development and to promote effective implementation of sustainable development policies. Participation of the private sector and civil society stakeholder groups have been promoted with the process developed around nine Major Groups - Business and Industry; Children and Youth; Farmers; Indigenous Peoples; Local Authorities; Non-Governmental Organizations; Scientific and Technological Community; Women; Workers and Trade Unions.

?The Road to Rio 2012: Charting Our Path?, organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is the theme of the Major Groups and Stakeholders (MGS) Asia Pacific Meeting, which will take place 17-18 October, 2011. The regional consultation will directly feed into the Rio+20 preparatory processes and is an opportunity for major groups and stakeholders to contribute to the development of final outcomes at the Rio+20 summit. Outcomes will be in the form of messages, statements and contributions from major groups to the themes of the Conference.

There are four key areas of focus: a review of commitments, discussion of emerging issues, looking at the green economy in the context of poverty eradication and sustainable development as well as to establish an institutional framework for sustainable development.

The MGS Asia Pacific Meeting will take place back to back with the Capacity building on Rio+20 and effective engagement with UN Commission for Sustainable Development (UNCSD) , and the Asia-Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting (RPM) for the UNCSD, to be held on 19-20 October 2011 , also in Seoul. Major group organisations who will participate in the RPM are expected to also participate in the MGS AP Meeting.
