ESCAP prep-meeting
In preparation for this event, young people collected opinions, perspectives, hopes and views from young people from the region. They are using this as the basis of their participation during the ESCAP prep meeting in the Republic of Korea.

More than 250 Government and civil society delegates from over 40 Asia-Pacific countries met to adopt a regional statement to be tabled at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) ? also known as ?Rio +20? ? to be held next year. This event was sponsored by the Republic of Korea.

Young representatives of Children and Youth Major Group attended the ESCAP Regional Preparatory Meetings. Young people from all over the region have rigorously prepared statements and have great hopes for the ESCAP Regional Preparatory Meeting. Over the last two days they had the opportunity to participate in drafting the Asian and Pacific Statement to the UNCSD. They also share their ideas on how to build capacity of regional actors to participate in the global process and what they considered to be the emerging issues.

There is hope that the this event will raise greater awareness of the unique challenges that face the Asian and Pacific regions, progress made by the region and the potential contributions of the region to the global debate. Information and materials for this meeting are being made available on the ESCAP website at: http://www.unescap.org/esd/environment/Rio20/pages/RPM.html.

The young people attending this meeting will focus on sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific, looking at the key challenges and opportunities. They will try to provide their perspective on the implementation of Agenda 21, the Program for Further Implementation of Agenda 21 and the Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development/Johannesburg Plan of Implementation as it implemented in Asia and the Pacific. They will look at the past Regional Preparatory Meeting documentation covering the two themes of Rio +20:
- Green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication;
- Institutional framework for sustainable development.
