Clarkson University

With the 2011 revision of our Mission, Vision and Values statements and current strategic planning process, Clarkson University has committed to integrating sustainability into “everything we do.” Our progress is being measured with the use of AASHE STARs assessment metrics, through which we expect a Silver rating. Examples of the quantifiable objectives to be achieved by 2015 include reduced energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, reduced solid waste and paper consumption, and increased number of offices that participate in our sustainable office certification program.

Improved communication about sustainability, revised job descriptions for all employees, and spanning boundaries between academic and operations are instrumental in meeting the quantitative objectives.

The use of our campus and community as a living laboratory has been instrumental in our educational efforts to date. From our on-campus greenhouse and digester to a small village in Ecuador, students from across disciplines work with faculty and staff across organization boundaries to experience, explore and learn how our commitment to sustainable practices and philosophies can be integrated to improve social good and ecosystem health.
