IIMSAM Sustainable Spirulina Outreach Program
Organization(s) making commitment
IIMSAM, The intergovernmental Institution for the use of Microalgae Sprirulina Against Malnutrition
IIMSAM (ECAP) East and Central Africa Program
Achievement of Commitment
By utilizing Spirulina to eradicate various pathologies and deprivations associated with malnutrition amongst children and others suffering from malnutrition, IIMSAM aspires to make Spirulina, described by the U.N. world Food Conference of 1974 as the "best food for the future", as a key-driver to eradicate malnutrition and achieve food security.
As part of this commitment, IIMSAM will increase the number of children, pregnant and nursing mothers and other malnourished or undernourished individuals that are currently being helped at the IIMSAM Sheikh Zayed Spirulina Distribution Centre, by 50,000, during the year of 2013.
How this will be achieved
IIMSAM (ECAP) provides seminars and training workshops for women and male local farmers, local NGO's and decision makers to share knowledge of spirulina cultivation, harvesting and processing.
IIMSAM ECAP beneficiaries include local women and male farmers who will have an opportunity to develop small-enterprises, self-employment and self-empowerment.
IIMSAM and it's strategic working partner MagicLine (European based spirulina supplier) will distribute spirulina to other areas than Kisumu, where malnutrition rates are particularly high.
