The Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED) Showcase Programme is designed to support stakeholder driven projects that aim at innovation in policy development, technology application, social mobilisation and partnership building for sustainability. The programme, as one of the pillars of the Second Phase of APFED (APFED II), promotes local initiatives in the field by responding to the needs of “innovation” emphasized in the first phase of APFED. The APFED Showcase Programme provided opportunities for various actors (CSOs, NGOs, companies) in the region to highlight creative ideas, technologies and practices, aiming to facilitate their widespread application in Asia-Pacific. The Programme also complements other APFED Action Platform mechanisms such as multi-stakeholder interactive channels (Policy Dialogue) and sustainable development initiatives (Knowledge Initiative) as described in the APFED I Final Report.

The APFED Showcase Programme highlights projects which are creating enabling conditions at the community level for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. From climate change, biodiversity, resource resilience, water and several cross-cutting thematic areas like capacity development, the showcase projects promote societal transition to a Green Economy, which recognizes the value of, and invests in, natural capital. Featured projects have identified an array of success factors highlighting the importance of focus on and involvement of the community, optimization of local resources, stakeholder mobilization and empowerment, and linkage with macro policy.

The creation of NetRes ( the Asia-Pacific Regional Network of Policy Research Institutes for Environment and Sustainable Development) as a network of eight key institutes from different sub-regions, has been instrumental for the programme. For each of the approved projects, a NetRes institute is assigned to support their facilitation including ensuring effective implementation, devising monitoring and evaluation methodologies and providing guidance in drawing lessons and accumulated knowledge from the project implementation to be shared with wider audience. This partnership has been especially valuable in catalysing vertical information sharing between project implementing organizations and NetRes, as well as the horizontal sharing of information between NetRes Institutions.

The APFED Showcase projects demonstrate achievements and future challenges, acknowledging that sustainable development is not an end goal, but an ongoing process. Key challenges in the path of sustainable development as identified through the programme include assuring consistent policy development, participation of stakeholders and civil society in decision making, creating constructive interaction and partnerships, linking field action with macro policy transformation, replication of good practices and promoting regional and international cooperation.
