Rio+20 Global Town Hall
18 Jun 2012 - 22 Jun 2012
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Approximately 9 billion people will be sharing the earth in the next three decades. Continued rapid urbanization will lead to 3 billion new urban dwellers. Over the next 40 years we will have to build the same urban capacity as we have built over the past 4000 years.

How can we ensure basic, decent livelihoods for all, with more equality and social justice, when climatic changes will have taken effect and scarcity will have led to significant price increases in water, food, mineral oil, natural gas, and many materials?

We can no longer just make incremental changes to the status quo. We need to determine how human life and urban fabrics in 2030 shall look like. And what decisions need to be taken today ? notably, by the Rio+20 summit, to ensure that our economy, our cities will provide the desired conditions.

To address the challenges ahead, ICLEI is organizing the Rio+20 Global Town Hall during the UN Conference on Sustainable Development from 18-22 June 2012. This will be the key venue at Rio+20 to discuss the sustainable urban future and agree on solutions for the future.
