The First BioTrade Congress is organized on the occasion of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20 Conference) during the Days of Dialogue on sustainable development. The Summit seeks to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, and one of the two issues considered is the role of the Green Economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty alleviation.

Biofuels represent a promising, albeit controversial, alternative to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. They can deliver renewable energy services in sectors such as transport, cooking and small-scale electricity generation. Since different countries have different development needs, the role which biofuels can play is dependent on the specific contexts where they are to be developed.
