Policy-Making for Renewable Energies
Summary

Although renewable energy technology costs are dropping dramatically,the key driver for advancing renewables remains forward-thinking policy decisions at the local, state and national levels. Market forces alone are not able, at present, to scale up the adoption of renewables or deliver sustainable energy services required to meet the needs s of the world?s poor.

This workshop will address the role of policies towards creating enabling environments for renewable energy, a pre-requisite towards large investment by making financing available and affordable. After the workshop participants will:
? Have an overview of renewable energy policies and markets;
? Understand why and under which conditions renewable energy-policy support is needed;
? Know about existing barriers to the design and implementation of successful renewable energy policy, both in the grid connected context and for access to energy in rural areas;
? Benefit from over fifteen years of international experience on policy options to date, and which have been most successful and under which conditions;
? Understand how a combination of policy packages can mobilize large-scale private investment and help achieving the levels of RE penetration required for energy access for all by 2030 and to;
? Have access points to advanced renewable energy training and knowledge resources.
