Synthesis of National Reports for RIO+20, UN DESA/UNDP
This synthesis report concludes that many countries have made substantial progress over the last twenty years in establishing and strengthening the institutional frameworks necessary to ensure sustainable development. The progress made on the conceptual and institutional levels in the two decades that followed the Earth Summit represents a significant achievement.

In preparation for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) also known as Rio +20, to be held from 20-22, June 2012, UNDESA and UNDP are supporting more than 70 countries to engage stakeholders to review progress, challenges and gaps in the implementation of sustainable development over the last two decades. The preparations are intended to be nationally-led and owned; informed by national development processes, plans and strategies; and reflect the views of participating stakeholders. They consist of three consecutive and interlinked components:

i. Preparation of a stocktaking report based on interviews, consultations and desk review;

ii. Multi-stakeholder consultations to address the objective and themes of UNCSD, informed by the stocktaking report; and

iii. Preparation of a national report based on the outcomes of both the stocktaking report and multi-stakeholder consultation meeting.
